Information on external funding and financial support

Important Note: While the University of Rwanda does not currently offer direct internal scholarship programs, we are committed to helping our students identify and apply for external funding opportunities. We encourage students to explore various third-party sponsorships, government grants, and international partner programs.

Government Sponsorship

The primary source of funding for Rwandan students, managed by the Higher Education Council (HEC) and BRD.

  • Managed via HEC/BRD
  • Based on National Exam results
  • Subject to loan recovery terms

Partner Organizations

Various international agencies and embassies offer specialized scholarships for UR students.

  • Mastercard Foundation
  • DAAD & Erasmus+
  • EAC & African Union grants

Private Sponsorships

Local banks, NGOs, and private foundations that occasionally offer merit-based assistance.

  • Bank-sponsored loans
  • NGO education grants
  • Community-based support

How to Secure External Funding

Key Steps:

  1. Apply and secure admission at UR first
  2. Monitor the HEC website for government calls
  3. Prepare your transcripts and recommendation letters
  4. Submit applications directly to the sponsoring body

Support from UR:

  • Verification of student status
  • Academic recommendation services
  • Publicizing external scholarship calls
